Merry Christmas

Thursday, October 22, 2009

Here are 4 pics of a quilt that I'm currently working on for a christmas present. I am thinking that each block should be framed with black fabric, or maybe an orange tie-dye. What do you think?

Apartment residents told to take down U.S. flags

Now if this doesn't just make your blood boil???
Hey... I say if The American Flag offends you, then maybe you should find another country to reside in. Maybe then the unemployment rate would go down, as well as other federal, state, & local program costs. I'm not only a proud American, but a Proud Texan as well, so if you don't like it...then LEAVE!

Apartment residents told to take down U.S. flags
Residents of the Oaks Apartments in Albany have reportedly been told to take down their flags. Even this one, on the back of a motorcycle, is part of the reported ban.

By Melica Johnson KATU News and KATU.com Staff Video UPDATE: The flag ban was lifted a few days after this story aired. Read more here.

ALBANY, Ore. - At the Oaks Apartments in Albany, the management can fly their own flag advertising one and two bedroom apartments - but residents have been told they can't fly any flags at all.

Jim Clausen flies the American flag from the back of his motorcycle. He has a son in the military heading back to Iraq, and the flag - he said - is his way of showing support.

"This flag stands for all those people," said Clausen, an Oaks Apartment resident. "It stands for the people that can no longer stand - who died in wars. That's why I fly this flag."

But to Oaks Apartment management, Clausen said, the American flag symbolizes problems.

He was told to remove the red, white and blue from both of his rides, or face eviction.

"It floored me," he said. "I can't believe she was saying what she was saying."

Even long-time residents like Sharron White, who has flown a flag on her car for eight years, has been told to take it down.

White said management told her that "someone might get offended."

"I just said to her 'They'll just have to get over it,'" White said.

Resident we talked to who had been approached to take down their flags all told us the same thing: that management told them the flags could be offensive because they live in a diverse community.

Attempts to find out for ourselves why management would ban flags were unsuccessful. KATU wanted to talk to management at Oaks Apartments, but no one has returned our calls. The woman we were told had made the decision said she was "not going to answer any questions."

The mother of one soldier fighting in Iraq put up a poster in her son's apartment window when she learned of the ban. Her son's roommate said he'll risk eviction to make sure it stays.

Another Oaks Apartment resident, Judith Sherer, doesn't have a car. Instead she carries an American flag around the complex to protest the ban, and wonders if the flag pin she wears is next to be "singled out."

"If I put it on and I walk outside, what's going to happen?" Sherer muses. "Am I going to be confronted by a manager about this?"

We're told the ban includes sports flags and even flag stickers on cars.

Where did 2009 go???

I just can't believe how fast this year went by, or how long it has been since I have posted to my blog.
I have spent this entire year trying to put my life back together again...well it has taken a few tries, but hey I didn't give up...which would have been easier. I have been working hard at work & @ home, & I have even managed to squeeze in some "ME" time.
I haven't quit smoking yet, but have cut down quite a bit. I rarely smoke at home, & not while driving.
My friend Charlotte & I have been going to a sewing workshop on Wed. afternoon, & I have quite a few X-mas gifts that I have been working on since July. We went to a quilt show, ( a 1st for both of us) a few Sundays ago that was sponsored by a local quilt guild. That was a fun afternoon, & we picked up a few new ideas there. I also picked up 2 new patterns while there. One is a cowboy boot quilt, & the other was a combo pin cushion, thread catcher that sits right next to your sewing machine.
I also made some Dallas Cowboy Christmas stocking, & working on some UT, & San Antonio Spurs stockings as well. No pictures yet...& since they are registered trademark fabrics, I don't know if I could post them anyway???
I also have 2 quilts in the works, another that I'm getting ready to cut, & a few that just need some finishing up. Looks like I'm just going make Sunday my designated sewing day, after I get everything ready for the assembly line.
Well this years' weather has not been easy on my right lung, & so I'm having some pulmonary issues. With all the humidity, the air quality, & the allergens, I just found it very hard to manage my lung problem. Oh, & did I mention that I had the flu for a few days in the heat of summer? I really am considering getting not only the flu shot this year, but also the swine-flu vaccine.
Well until next time, hopefully I'll have some pictures from my workshop to post. Can't wait for Thanksgiving, ...I keep eye-balling that turkey in the freezer, & I am cutting up bread cubes for the stuffing, & making cornbread...yummy!

Reviews,Rants, & other Rambles!

The Reviews:
Well I've been using the Eco-friendly dishwasher liquid & it works great! Not only is is saving the earths water supply, it's also saving my pocketbook. It was as economical as most of the leading brands, & cheaper than some of the others. Also it left less water spots on my glassware...what a bonus!
While we are talking about the environment, here is a site that you can look up how much each appliance you have will save you. Go check it out!!!
Also, after a long day of shopping, & not wanting to make the last stop at the video rental store, I purchased a DVD at Wal-mart called "5 people you meet in heaven", starring Jon Voight. It started out kinda slow, but it turned out to be a great movie. I had never heard of it before, & didn't look to see when It came out, but it must have been a sleeper. I mentioned it to 1 of my friends, & they were actually reading the book! Wish I had time to read, but for now I'll just watch movies.
The Rambles:
I asked a few of my buddies from Multiply about the border fabric for my sassy ladies blocks & they suggested that I use white with black polka-dots. I think that would look great, & funky too! Are there any other suggestions out there? Please leave me a comment.

Eco friendly products

Well today I bought a new dishwashing detergent called "eco + " made by Palmolive. The label says that it has 0 % sodium tripolyphosphates. That translates into that it's better for our lakes & streams. Does it work, well I don't know yet, but you can be sure that I'll give you the verdict when I get the dishwasher loaded. Oh, the dishwasher has an energy star rating too, so maybe I'll be getting bonus points from mother earth.
Now I usually blog about my sewing/crafting, but I would like to mention a new website that is earth friendly, & hope that you might visit it sometime. It's called "Crafing a green world."

Happy New Year 2009-Help me save the planet!

...and back to blogging and sewing! I bought myself a new PC for X-mas, & I'm back online...YIPEE!
Now to start some new projects & finish up some old ones.

Also, I'm gonna start the new year out right by finding new things to re-cycle. I know all of us generate so much trash on a daily basis, & we have become such a disposable society. We don't use & re-use anything, we just buy, use, & throw away. almost all of my light bulbs have been changed to spiral fluorescent bulbs to save energy. I unplug all of my small appliances & chargers when they are not in use. If I use disposable plates...which isn't often...I buy paper, not plastic. I crush my own cans, put magazines, newspapers, soda bottles, & phone books in the re-cycle bin for the city. Tin cans, cardboard boxes, &Styrofoam packing are now finding their way into the bin as well. I wonder how many of you recycle your trash? What do you re-cycle? What else can we do to help save the planet for our children's children??? Leave me your feedback in the comment section please.
